Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2016 Quantity Take-off Tutorial / Example:
Creating a quantity take-off in Navisworks Manage 2016 is quite similar to the process that we followed with Autodesk Quantity Take-off, prior to its combining with Navisworks.
As long as your source model is logical, and does not contain walls that runs from the lowest level to the highest level (unless you only have 2 levels) or columns that rises 2 or more levels or foundations that is supposed to be associated to the lowest level, but instead is associated with the Roof level, and has a base offset of -25000. These are the things that would ususally mess up the QTO process.
So, assuming that you have a model that was not developed by a complete idiot, I'm using one from Revit, courtesy of Prokon Software Consultants, do the nessecary exports to Navisworks and append the model using the exported Navisworks cache file.
If you are not yet familiar with this process, here is a brief explanation:
A. Make sure that you have installed the latest Navisworks exporters from here: http://trial2.autodesk.com/NET16SWDLD/2016/GENERIC/DLM/Autodesk_Navisworks_Exporters_2016_Multilingual_Win_32_64bit_r2_dlm.sfx.exe
B. You will now be able to export to NWC files from a range of applications including Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD etc...
C. Using Revit in my example, click on "NWC" from the "Export" application menu, and save the Navisworks cache file somewhere (Note that I recommend being in a full 3D view with all elements visible)
D. From Navisworks, use the "Append" command and navigate to the exported NWC file (remember to change the "files of type" first from the open file dialog to "*.nwc")
OK, so now we are good to go! To perform the quantity takeoff, do the following:
1. Make sure that you have the "Selection Tree" and the "Quantification Workbook" palettes open:
2. Click on the button labelled "Project Setup" from the "Quantification" workbook:
3. Choose a quantification format to use, there are 3 by default, with no explanation whatsoever of what they mean. So here is a short explanation (I used Uniformat for this example):
The quantification templates makes use of a XML schema which defines the basic groups and group items to be used, you can open these templates with something like Notepad++, and easily add / remove items, or you can do it by using the built-in commands available in Navisworks after you have chosen to create a new QTO from the selected template.
The 3 default templates are:
3.1 CSI-16 which is a very basic template, with only a few root group items:
3.2 CSI-48 is a more detailed template, but still only consists of root group items:
3.3 Uniformat is the comprehensive one, with complex root, and branch group items for many categories:
4. Choose the Measurement Units to use:
5. Specify the measurements units per object type to use:
6. Make sure that you have the "Quantification Workbook" active:
7. Select sub-groups of elements from the "Selection Tree" palette:
8. Right-Click on the appropriate "group" element and choose "Take off Selected Model Items":
9. Repeat for the other categories / object types:
10. Note that you can also "drag-and-drop" whole categories / floors from the "Selection Tree" directly onto a blank spot on the "Quantification Workbook" to dynamically create a new quantification category, with he sub-elements as sub-groups:
11. Finally, use the "Export" tools to export to Excel, and apply additional calculations!
